Title:-A critical study of the use of Krishna tulas in pulmonary tuberculosis (Rajyakshma). At various stages with or without effusion and its comparison with the standard Anti-tubercular treatment with special reference to bacteriological parameters.

Dr. V. V. Upasani had submitted his dissertation to Pune University.      His guide was Prof. Dr. B. R. Mardikar.

Dr. V. V. Upasani in his research work tried to study the use of Krishna tulas in pulmonary tuberculosis (Rajyakshma). At various stages with or without effusion and compared it with the standard anti-tubercular treatment with special reference to bacteriological parameters.

For the study aqueous decoction of Krishna tulas (Basil) was prepared. Study was carried out in two parts-
i)                   In vitro study – Human tubercular bacillus obtained from confirmed open cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. The sputum from one patient was stroked over two L.J. media one containing the 10% aqueous decoction of Krishna tulas & the other without decoction of Krishna tulas. They were stored in B.O.D. incubators at a temperature of -4 degree Celsius and relative humidity of approximately 30.18 samples was studied.
ii)                In vivo study- Randomly selected patients having age between 15-35 years & having active tuberculosis treated with Krishna tulas powder. Single blind method is adopted. 250 mg Krishna tulas powder was encapsulated in 00 gelatin capsules. 8 to 12 capsules in divided doses were given to patients according to severity of the disease. All the patients received minimum 6 capsules & the maximum dose was 12 capsules ( 3000 mg total)

The study was concluded as follows-
Krishna Tulas showed promising results in Vivo & in Vitro in cases of Tuberculosis
