Title – Comparative study of Hemagarbha and panchakarma therapy (Hrutbasti and basti) on Hrutshula with special reference to Ischemic heart disease.

Dr. Ghanashyam Marda had submitted his dissertation to Pune University for the P.G. degree M.D. (Kaya Chikitsa). His guide was Prof. Dr. P. H. Kulkarni & Research center was Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Pune (M.S.) India.

Dr. Ghanashyam Marda in his research work tried to compare effect of Hemagarbha and panchakarma therapy (Hrutbasti and basti) on Hrutshula with special reference to Ischemic heart disease.

Study was carried out in four groups as follows
a)     Group A – Patients treated with Hemagarbha rasa only.
b)    Group B – Patients treated with panchakarma therapy. (Hrutbasti and basti) only.
c)     Group C – Patients treated with both panchakarma therapy and Hemagarbha.

Method of administration of drugs was as follows –
i)                   Hemagarbha tablets of 125 mg in sookshma form (3X) are given as per patient’s condition, minimum twice a day through sublingual mucosal route along with honey & ginger juice. In some patients it was given more than twice.
ii)                Panchakarma therapy – a) Basti of Bhadradarvyadi Tail 60 to 100 cc given once in a day in the afternoon in vata kala i.e. 2 hrs after lunch. b) Hrutbasti of Bhadradarvyadi Tail given for 20to 30 min once in a day. All signs & symptoms were scored according to severity. Newyourk Heart association (NYHA) and Canadian cardiology society (CCS) classification were used. General symptoms of Heart disease were given scores ranging from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. Specific symptoms of heart disease were given scores ranging from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. For objective evaluation ECG, 2D Echo cardio gram / Master’s stress test etc. were used.

Criteria for evaluation of total effect was as follows –
i)                   Cured – 100% relief in sign & symptoms.
ii)                Markedly improved – more than 50% average relief shown by patients in their sign & symptoms.
iii)              Improved – improvement below 50% but not less than 25% in sign & symptoms.
iv)              Better – Improvement upto 25% in sign & symptoms.
v)                Stable – checking of the process without improvement in their sign & symptoms.
vi)              Deteriorarion – increase in the present sign & symptoms.
Paired & test were applied

The study was concluded as follows
Combined Treatment with Hemagarbha tablets of 125 mg in sookshma form (3X) BD with honey & ginger juice + Basti of Bhadradarvyadi Tail 60 to 100 cc given once in a day in the afternoon in vata kala i.e. 2 hrs after lunch. b) Hrutbasti of Bhadradarvyadi Tail given for 20to 30 min once in a day gave Statistically relief in Anginal pain in the patients of IHD

Males & people from middle economical class followed by rich class were affected. No adverse effect was observed by non veg/mixed diet.
Patients treated with panchakarma & Hemagarbha together got better relief. Hrutbasti & hemagarbha had statistically significant effect on Hrutshula and IHD
The treatment is statistically significant on number of angina attacks and dose of nitrates required.
The effect of control on hypertension was found statistically more significant in study group than control group.
